Cornish beaches and Poldark Country

Our Environment

Cornwall's environment is unique with its granite moorland spine overlooking the sea on both sides. Our site is situated alongside Bodmin Moor and beneath Caradon Hill. Where, on a clear day, visitors have a glittering range of options to view from its summit. Our site offers the perfect location to base yourself from when it comes to getting out and exploring the cornish moorland and beaches or even getting across the Tamar into the vibrant City of Plymouth (22 miles)!

To the South, we have the beaches at Looe (12 miles) and Whitsand Bay (12 miles) and to the North we have the spectacular moorland around Caradon Hill (2 miles), which is littered with History and hidden gems like the Golitha Falls (5 miles) and Cheesewring stones (5 miles). Or, if you're looking for even more of an adventure you can run or ride the many trails in the area with a challenge for all abilities and for the real adrenaline junckies, we have the nationally renowned Adrenaline quarry only a 5 miles away from us! There is also the fantastic Cardinham woods(15 miles), perfect for woodland walks with the dog or heart racing downhill mountain biking!

In the east just across the Tamar Valley, Brentor Church (20 miles) stands on its rugged outcrop with the hills and tors of Dartmoor rising up behind it. To the west on a clear day the sun shimmers off the satellite dishes of the Goonhilly Earth station (63 miles) on the Lizard Peninsula. The most southerly point of Britain.
Long designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty, more recently this part of Bodmin Moor achieved international recognition as part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape area World Heritage site.

So whether it's a brisk walk along 4 miles of beach at Whitsand Bay or exploring the silent engine houses of the Caradon Mining District there really is something for everyone

The Family:

Having been raised at Fursdon when it was a working dairy farm, Kathryn was instrumental in working with her parents Brian and Barbara to diversify into camping and caravanning. Using their own personal camping and caravanning experiences the first event, a rally was held in 1990. There was some concern from Brian as to whether people would want to come and sit in a field! However this was soon allayed with growing numbers attending the rallies and year on year recognition as a Camping & Caravanning Club Member Recommended Site. Returning to live in 2008 Kathryn and John have developed Fursdon to meet the standards required by Cornwall Council for a fully licensed camping and caravan site, together with Rebel the family black Labrador and Billy, Millie and Sox the cats they turned Fursdon into a popular and welcoming hideaway camp site. Now thier youngest son Andrew and His wife Jess, two cats Hendricks and Bailey and new addition Bear the German Shepherd have returned home to carry on in the same vein, but adding some of their own individual touches. Together we cannot wait to welcome you to our small piece of Cornwall!

Cornish Tin Mining

Our Culture

The environment has helped to shape local culture. It's not just the famous pasty that came from the mining era. Choirs and sports such as Cornish Wrestling and Hurling have been a part of local history for generations . But change happens so look out! Old traditions have not just been maintained but actively developed.
If you happen to be in a local pub when the "shout" starts hold onto your drinks as for certain you will be soon singing along to some of the songs. Other, perhaps more formal, choirs are available! If you really do want to see the buoy band perform on the Platt at Port Isaac then check out the Fishermen's Friends facebook page and go. You will not be disappointed.

In addition to surfing and coasteering why not try Cornish Gig rowing? Its popularity has spread well beyond the Tamar. Crews competing in the annual World Championships on the Isles of Scilly include gig clubs from Ireland , France, the Netherlands , Bermuda and the USA.

The annual Liskeard Agricultural Show held just a few fields away brings together the very best of Cornish produce and producers. Providing an opportunity for local people and visitors to meet and celebrate their achievements.

East Cornwall is a centre for the arts. Bringing it all together is our own local Sterts Theatre with a varied and packed programme under canvas. Or maybe attend a concert in a cave? Well Carnglaze Caverns offers a bit more comfort than that! You may even find some rum if you look carefully.
So from the arts to sport Cornwall offers something for everyone. But don't forget to relax and unwind. Our aim as a hideaway site is to let the fresh air facilitate afternoon siestas with peace and quiet allowing us to gaze and marvel at the stars in the glorious dark skies.

The Manor House Pub at Rilla

Our Neighbours

Though only a short drive from the tourist hotspots in the Duchy, making them readily available to visit and explore, our own part of Cornwall remains free from some of the peak season challenges. Indeed we are proud that our site is chosen by local people for their annual holiday.
The many excellent pubs and restaurants in the area offer a warm welcome and genuine good value which brings in the repeat business so essential for twelve months a year operations.
Our immediate neighbours are members of the farming community who, for generations in some cases, have farmed with deserved pride. It is their committed stewardship of the land that has provided us with the fantastic natural habitat which surrounds our home and site. To them we extend our thanks.
If you want to combine your stay with a particular interest please tell us. There are a host of local clubs and associations which welcome visitors to their meetings and events. So whether its running and cycling, the arts or choirs and dance tell us about your interests and we feel confident we can source an opportunity to further enjoyment of your hobby and make new friends.
So a warm Truly Cornish welcome to one and all..
